Whether you’re a senior in high school or a senior in college, a professional headshot should be high on your to-do list.
My son is graduating from Bentonville High School this year and we have been busy with college visits and all his last moments of his high school career. And yes, senior pictures!
As a senior in high school, a LinkedIn profile photo might not be the first thing on your mind. But soon, you will be in college or looking for a job and a quality headshot will set you ahead of your competition. Your senior photoshoot is the perfect time to take a professional headshot or two! Make sure you ask your senior portrait photographer for a few professional headshots as part of the package.
Why graduates need a headshot
Headshots can be used for a variety of things. For high school seniors, your headshot could be used for college applications, internship applications, LinkedIn profile photos, and resumes. Most college seniors have professional photos of themselves, but not all freshman do. Having a professional headshot could set you apart from other students your age.
For college seniors, headshots could be used for LinkedIn, resumes, presentations, publications, and even other social media. Employers check social media before hiring, so it’s important to make a good impression. If you already have a headshot but it’s a few years old, consider updating it before you start applying for jobs.
A professional headshot, rather than a portrait taken with a phone or point-and-shoot camera, will be taken more seriously and make you look more prepared, and potentially even more mature. It’s a great way to make a positive first impression for anyone you want to work with.
A few tips for choosing a headshot
I recommend having both a business headshot and a more casual headshot for all professionals, including graduates entering the workforce. Use your business headshot for more professional instances, and your casual headshot for social media. For more information, read my blog on types of headshots. These would be headshots that are different from your more fun senior photos that you pass out to family and friends.
And, make sure to get an updated headshot every few years so that it still looks like you. Your high school senior headshot will work for a few years, but you should not be using it for job hunting after college.
What to wear for a professional headshot
Most of my clients getting their senior portraits have a variety of backgrounds and outfits they wear to represent all aspects of their senior year. Your clothing selection should include something that is appropriate for your headshot.
For men, a button up with a blazer works well. Bring a tie so you have a few options. Something simple like removing or adding a tie can make an easy transition between a more serious headshot and a more casual headshot.
For women, a button-up shirt or solid-colored blouse and a simple necklace look professional. If you want to add some color to your outfit, make sure that it isn’t too much that it distracts from your face.
