Small Business Saturday was created by American Express a couple of years ago to inspire people to shop at their local small businesses. This includes stores, restaurants and yes, service businesses like Linda Richards Photography!
We love this idea and it’s not just because we are one of 28 million small businesses in the United States. We love the idea of supporting our neighbors, friends and fellow community members. Did you know that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $58 of that finds its way to the local economy? That’s compared to $100 spent in a national chain store funneling $33 into a local economy.
So where do you plan to shop on Small Business Saturday? If you’re tired of turkey leftovers, you could also enjoy some of your favorite local restaurants.
There’s no doubt that Instagram and other social media sites will be filled with pictures from Black Friday. How about we do the same for Small Business Saturday? Use your social media to “check in” at each store. Take photos to capture the fun you’re having. From what we’ve seen, most are using the hashtag #ShopSmall. When you check in, share what you’re looking for and what you find!
Don’t forget that not all small businesses have a store front and sell products. About half small businesses are now considered home-based, did you know that? And many are service-oriented like ours. Don’t just shop local on Small Business Saturday, we hope that you make it a habit all year long.
