If you know me well, you will know that I love babies. I don’t mean I love babies like everyone loves babies, I seriously love babies. I have had four newborn sessions in the last seven months and oh how I love them. For me, newborn sessions are the most challenging, the longest photography session I do, and can be the most difficult to edit but photographing a newborn is very rewarding when the final product is complete. The joy from photographing a newborn through one year is one of my most favorite experiences in what I do. I get attached to the children and their families so easily because I get to see them often.
My newborn clients will come back to see me at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and one year typically. I photograph newborns at 2 -3 weeks old in the parents home since it is the most convenient for the families. I use natural light setting up near a window and I try to get photographs in the nursery. I bring along props and incorporate bows or blankets the parents have that they want to use. We start out with the baby asleep and when he/she wakes up we do family photos. At least that is the plan we start with. Since these sessions are not like a typical photography session I provide clients with some tips to prepare them for the session.
Tips for a successful newborn session include:
- Have the baby fed and asleep at the time the photographer arrives.
- Put the baby in a loose diaper wrapped in a warm blanket when the photographer arrives.
- Keep your home warm and have a blow dryer nearby to use for warmth and/or white noise.
- Expect your baby to potty on the props and know that the photographer expects this as well. Keep wipes nearby.
- If your baby is already on a schedule for feeding and sleeping the session will disrupt this schedule most likely. You may need to feed the baby in the middle of the session to try and get him/her to sleep again.
It is best to book your session with your photographer tentatively before the baby is born and notify the photographer as soon as you can so it can be scheduled around the 2 week mark. It is also good to find out about baby club packages when you are pregnant so you can have those decisions behind you when you are so in love with your newborn (and tired) that you can’t think past the present. You can reference what I wrote on getting the right style of maternity photos for yourself which is a great time to discuss baby’s first year.
Babies change in appearance everyday and I find it is such a special time to photograph newborns early in a unique and beautiful way. You can never get this time back and they are photographs that will be cherished forever. Also, around two weeks old babies are sleepy, soft and easier to pose which is why photographers recommend this age for the first session.
Newborn sessions make for a great shower gift and if you are interested in purchasing a gift certificate for a friend or family member contact us to arrange this generous, priceless gift. Be sure to check with the expectant mom to ensure she hasn’t already made arrangements for a photography session with a different photographer.
