How to: choose the right clothes for senior pictures

Spring is an exciting time in any high school senior’s life. There’s senior prom, graduation and lots of other lasting memories made with friends. One of the most fun ways to keep those memories alive for years to come is having senior pictures taken. My goal is to make the experience easy, fun and memorable. Clothing is a big part of the senior experience.

Senior pictures are about documenting the personality and interests of a high school senior during this chapter in his or her life. I love photographing seniors because they are so full of hope for a future they have dreamed about. They haven’t been jaded by disappointments and setbacks. They are ready to charge ahead to tackle anything and everything in front of them.

Choosing what to wear for the senior pictures is just as important as finding the right photographer. (Finding the right photographer is another topic I will address in the future.) Fashion is an opportunity for both men and women to express their personality and is a tool for choosing how they want to present themselves to the world for the next four years – their bridge to adulthood.

Many seniors not only choose multiple poses and outfits, but multiple locations as well. Getting more than one pose helps create memories of the many aspects of their high school days. Athletes often have a picture in their jersey and musicians often use their instrument as a prop for one of their senior pictures. The schools offer the opportunity for graduates to have a formal shot in their graduate cap and gown so the photography session you have with your photographer outside of school allows you to showcase the many sides to your personality.

What is on the minds of all seniors when planning their senior photography session? What do I wear? The first piece of advice I give to any client before a photoshoot is to be attentive when selecting clothing to the fact that contrasting colors as well as contrasting textures both tend to photograph well.

 Let’s talk about colors

Pantone-Spring-2013-ColorsFor both the guys and girls, the current trends for spring emphasize balancing out soothing neutrals with a wide variety of bright colors. This is the time of a senior’s life when they most want to express themselves and the fashion world is following that trend. By blending neutrals like Alloy (medium gray) with bright, dynamic colors like Emerald or Poppy Red, seniors can discover a sense of practicality that is attractive yet versatile. It’s a way to showcase their youthful exuberance along with their emerging adulthood.

Nature is another big contributor to this year’s color palette. There are many shades of green, many which can be blended together for an intriguing fashion choice. The idea of bringing nature into the wardrobe fits perfect for those photos that are shot in nature such as a local field or the senior’s favorite walking trail.

So what are you going to wear for your senior photos? What colors best express your personality?
