We’re almost a full week into 2014—how are your resolutions? If you’re anything like me, I like to make goals for both my personal life and my professional life. Let me ask you this, have you considered a new headshot as part of reaching your professional resolutions?
Headshots for New Year’s? Really?
Professional/business goals include specific ways to grow, develop and improve your professional life. This could be a new job at a new company, or simply moving to a different position at your current company. Entrepreneurs also frequently make goals for growing their business or making other improvements.
So what does that have to do with headshots? In 2013, I wrote about why you need a headshot with reasons including more uses like social media profiles and business presentations, and creating a personal brand that exudes professionalism.
As we go into a new year, here are some reasons you should consider a new professional headshot as part of your goals:
Refreshed personal brand
Personal branding is as important for your career as your company’s branding. People do business with people and as you’ve grown as a person and a professional, the visual representation of your evolving personal brand should change with you. A new headshot can help demonstrate your new perspective on life and yourself.
People often come to associate a headshot with the job you currently have. If you plan on getting a new job, it’s a good idea to give yourself the gift of a new headshot to go with the new position (or desired new job). Have you heard the phrase, “dress for the job you want?” Your headshot should portray the image of the job you want.
Most people don’t choose extremely trendy clothes for their headshots but clothing trends still change over time-both in the fashion world and your own sense of style. Perhaps it’s time to have a new headshot that reflects your changing tastes and style. Consider this: if you don’t even own the shirt you’re wearing in your current headshot any more, it is time to consider a new headshot.
Attracting positive attention
How many times have you noticed on LinkedIn or Facebook when a connection changes their profile picture? Uploading a new headshot will attract attention to your profile and people will be more likely to show interest in what else your profile says (this is a vital time to make sure your LinkedIn profile is top-notch!).
So what are your plans? Is it time to update your image?
